Tossing paper airplanes was only the beginning.  sayville_soar_event_mar_2013

Energized Fourth- and Fifth-grade students have been powering enthusiasm for an introductory eight-week afterschool program—the new SOAR Program—aimed at interesting Sayville elementary students in aeronautical engineering. So far, it has taken off like a rocket!

Getting it off the ground was done with funding from the Sayville Educational Foundation to promote S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering and Math). However, SOAR program instructors Melinda Moran and Maria Brown were thrilled with the momentum and expressed their amazement after meeting with 27 extraordinarily eager young students from all three elementary schools at the Middle School for their afterschool sessions.

Plainview/Old Bethpage Career Cafe

Joe Godas from Cablevision shares his experience:  plainview-old bethpage career cafe 3-15-13

I participated in the Career day event at Bethpage High School on Friday, March 15, 2013.

The format was a bit different this year and worked out very well in my opinion.  There were 3 sessions where students were able to walk around and pick which tables they visited.  The students who sat at a given table were very engaged and had good questions.  I set the table up with examples of data communication technology (first generation modems up to present day cable modems) and associated wiring technology as a means to kick off discussions and show how technology is always advancing.

The morning went very fast and was over before I knew it.

On March 20, 2013, the Patchogue Medford High School ‘Corporate Raiders’ and school to career coordinator Lorraine Meyer, hosted a Career Connections Exploration Day at Patchogue Medford High School.  The event was attended by 40-50 local businesses and community representatives including local veterinary hospitals, armed forces recruiters, local politicians offices, local banks, a News 12 reporter, WALK radio representatives and Motorola Solutions, Inc.

Over 400 students participated in the 3 hour event which took place in their gymnasium.  The goal of the event was to expose high school students to the various career possibilities that are available to them in their future.  Many students were ready with questionnaires asking what career the presenters were representing, how much and what kind of training was needed to attain those careers, and what the starting salaries were of those careers.  It seemed to me from both the amount of students and presenters there, and the positive attitudes that everyone had, that the event was a huge success!
