BNL Elementary School Science Fair

The Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair brings together over 100 Suffolk County schools with over 470 projects created by students ranging from kindergarten through 6th grade.  Completed projects include experiments, demos and diagrams and are judged by BNL scientists as well as elementary school teachers.

Registration begins January 1, 2013 and runs through April 19, 2013 with the Science Fair taking place on May 4th.  Prizes are awarded for each grade level and winners receive a medal and banner for display at school.
 
STEM Programs Targeting Girls

The National Girls Collaborative Project seeks girl-centric STEM organizations throughout the US to connect them with students looking to learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  They offer a searchable directory to help connect and share resources.

 
High School Summer Science Institute

The American Museum of Natural History offers an opportunity for high school students to participate in weeklong sessions featuring Earth & Space (Session One: Aug 20 – 24, 2012) or Biology & Evolution (Session Two: Aug 27 – 31, 2012).  Meet scientists, get behind the scenes tours of collections as well as participating in hands on explorations.  The program is open to students 8th – 12th grades who live in, attend school or are home schooled within the five boroughs of New York City.

DNA Day Essay Contest

In celebration of DNA Day, the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) hosts an Annual DNA Day Essay Contest.  Open to students in the 9 – 12 grades, the contest’s goal is to ‘challenge students to examine, question, and reflect on the important concepts of genetics’.

Awards are given to first, second and third place winners as well as ten honorable mention prizes.  The 2012 question focused on gene regulation and the deadline for submission was March 12, 2012 at 5PM EST.  Bookmark this page as a reminder to come back next year to apply!
